If you’re looking for a unique, distinctive wedding venue in the Cincinnati area, then you need to visit The Transept, located in Over-the-Rhine.
This repurposed, reimagined historical gem dates back to 1814. It was originally known as St. Johns, the first German-American congregation in Cincinnati. The ornate detail and stunning design, including 50ft vaulted ceilings and stained glass windows, make it a textbook worthy example of German Gothic architecture. (With an Art History minor that would have been a third major if I had enough time, I’m completely enchanted by venues like this.)
It’s kind of funny to describe an old church as the most uniquely contemporary wedding venue I’ve painted this year... but believe me, this 18th century church in the heart of OTR (Cincinnati’s hottest brewery district) provided quite a modern, edgy atmosphere for Becca and Tim’s wedding. While I was there, I couldn’t help but imagine how different the place must have looked a couple centuries ago. Today, there’s a dance floor in place of pews, strings of globed lights instead of candles, and a pulpit once occupied by a priest is now the perfect stage for a band or DJ. The juxtaposition of contemporary details in this historical space made the décor especially alluring. Bright, jewel toned flowers (Yellow Canary Floral Design) complimented the gorgeous stained glass windows. The bridesmaid dresses followed the same rich and vivid palette (each dress a different color).

Such character and creative detail went into every aspect of this inspired event. I really have to hand it to Monica Kurlemann and everyone at Viva Bella Events for putting on such a fabulous occasion. There seemed to be a personal touch everywhere you looked. My favorite was the giant ice sculpture with flowers frozen in the center, surrounded by a Graeter’s Icecream bar - Incredible! (Photos by Nathan Peel Photography)
The layout of the venue was unique too, especially for me, as this was the first event where I was set up overlooking a balcony to paint the level below. This elevated perspective was definitely the unique challenge of this particular painting – a challenge that I’m thankful for, now that I can say I’m happy with how the painting turned out! Time and again, I notice the challenges that I curse at the beginning end up being the driving force of what I like most about the painting in the end.
The highlight of my night was when one of the youngest guests spotted himself in the painting. Throughout the rest of the evening, he continued to bring different people over, one by one, to see where he was on the canvas!

Some other recognizable guys to point out, I made sure to include Gold Standard Music on the stage. From the swanky, lounge style music during dinner to the upbeat, dance music in the later hours, the mood was spot on and guests were feeling the music all night.
I also want to give a HUGE shout out to Nathan of Nathan Peel Photography for getting so many awesome photos of this wedding, including several of my painting progress. His artistic eye for detail and creative shooting allowed him to perfectly capture the mood and feel of this unique event - Such talented photography of a truly inspired occasion.
Most important of all, congrats again to Becca and Tim! Thanks for having me there to capture the memory of your big day with paint! I wish you a lifetime of love and happiness and hope you cherish your painting for generations to come!
